Validity of forced expiratory flow volume loops in neonates

چکیده
It is claimed that suddenly squeezing a newborn baby's trunk with a pressure of 3-4 kPa produces a flow volume curve that can be used to measure the function of the small airways. If the squeeze is applied during expiration rather than at the end of inspiration, however, anomalous results may be obtained. One possible explanation is that the babies are limiting expiratory flow by making inspiratory efforts in response to the applied external

متن کاملEffects of Sodium Cromoglycate on Iranian Asthmatic Subjects Without Exposure to any Bronchoconstrictor agent
Cromolyn sodium, a mast cell stabilizing agent, provides an immediate protective effect against the exercise-induced bronchoconstriction while being used before the exercise. However, cromolyn is ineffective in reversing asthmatic bronchospasm; it is used as a maintenance therapy and has a prophylactic role in chronic asthma. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of change...

The pulmonary status of 178 asymptomatic asthmatic children with normal time-volume spirograms was further evaluated using flow-volume loops, body plethysmographic studies, and blood gas tensions in arterialized capillary blood. Residual volume (RV) was abnormal in 26 percent, total lung capacity (TLC) in 33 percent, RV/TLC % in 41 percent, and arterial oxygen pressure in 23 percent of them. Al...
متن کاملPrevention of cross infection during outpatient spirometry.
Lung function apparatus may be a source of cross infection in patients with cystic fibrosis and may be prevented using a 'bag in bottle' system. As this system has never been validated in children the flow volume loops performed using a Vitalograph Compact in the usual way were compared with results obtained blowing into the bag and bottle system, in random order, in 20 children with asthma (ag...
